What is a waning crescent moon?

A waning crescent is the last thin sliver before the new moon, visible low in the east just before sunrise.

Illumination drops from about a third to nearly nothing over the final few days of the cycle. The old moon is easy to miss entirely unless you are up early and the horizon is clear.

Traditionally this is the rest stage: the part of the month with the least demanded of it, before the cycle restarts at the next new moon.

Treating it as permission to do less for a few days is a reasonable, entirely optional way to use it.
