Is there a good astrology app without a subscription?

Yes. Undersky has no subscription. Your daily horoscope, your birth chart and its reading, and a first look at your year are free, and anything else is bought on its own.
The longer answer is about what "free" means in this category, and about what you are actually buying when you buy something, which store pages are not always clear about.
What does "free" usually mean in an astrology app?
Usually one of three things, and none of them are quite free. Knowing which one you are looking at takes about thirty seconds on the store page.
- A free trial. Free for a week, then it charges you. The store page says "Free Trial" near the purchase list.
- A free tier. The app is free but stops at the part you actually wanted, usually the birth chart reading or compatibility.
- Free, paid for another way. By advertising, or by selling you a consultation with a person.
None of these are dishonest and plenty of good apps use them. They are just different from free, and the word on the store page is the same either way.
Why do most astrology apps use subscriptions?
Because a subscription earns much more from someone who keeps the app for a year. That is a reasonable business decision and most of the category has made it.
It does have a side effect worth knowing about. A subscription needs you to come back every month, whether or not anything is going on in your life. That pushes an app towards notifications, streaks and daily hooks, because those are what keep a subscription alive.
A subscription needs you to come back. A tool needs to be there when you want it. Those are not the same product.
We wanted the second one, so we did not build a subscription. That is the whole reason, and it is a preference rather than a criticism.
What is free in Undersky?

Undersky works with the internet turned off, and there is no account and no sign-up, so none of this asks you for an email first.
What are you actually buying if you buy something?
Two different kinds of thing, and the difference matters. Some purchases stay yours; others are used up. Most apps do not spell this out, so here is ours in full.

We spell this out because a single blanket phrase would be wrong for one of the two kinds, and would misdescribe what you are paying for. Nothing renews, nothing auto-charges, and there is nothing to cancel. But "used up" and "yours forever" are genuinely different, and you should know which one you are choosing.
How do you check what an app charges before installing?
Scroll to In-App Purchases on the store page, where every purchase is listed with its price. It is public on every app and takes seconds.
- Look for In-App Purchases on the App Store listing, or Contains in-app purchases on Google Play.
- Read the names. A name with "monthly", "yearly" or "premium" in it is a subscription.
- Look for the words Free Trial, which mean a charge is coming.
- Check the price range. A single high price is usually a lifetime unlock; a long list of small ones is usually consumables.

What is the difference between a one-time purchase and a consumable?
A one-time purchase stays yours and can be restored on a new phone. A consumable is used up when you use it. Both show as In-App Purchases on a store page, and the page does not always make clear which is which.
Can I use an astrology app for free forever?
With Undersky, yes, if the free part is all you want. The daily horoscope, the birth chart and its reading, and the first look at your year do not expire and do not ask for an account.
Do I need an account or an email address?
